STEFAN HECKEL
Icebreaker (3´38´´)

Early winter in Vienna and audible iciness. Crossing the Danube on the Imperial Bridge with my eyes cast on the ground, a perforation in the pedestrian path suddenly attracts my attention. From deep down sea-green Danube water is sending out rays through a circular hole, flowing from right to left, the Imperial Bridge is sailing eastwards to the Black Sea. ... It is flowing, the strong icy wind creates white-crested waves. A little later - on the Danube Island - frozen-up puddles, thin ice crackling in my red ears. With the crackling sound and sea-green film in my pocket back to my workroom, where I add half a dozen half-frozen chords at my piano. Their melting point approximates that of the crackling icy patches. In this way, a warming balance is reached.
