postvinyl (2’12“)

The computer game "postvinyl" provides a DJ with the tools to create an immersive environment and to control the visuals and the soundscape of a game art performance via an "Unreal Tournament" modification. The system/ performance is a tool for ubiquitous computing on stage. Non-standard output devices like MIDI samplers, stage lighting and fog machines can be controlled live via a computer game, which becomes the interface for a DJ/ VJ. "postvinyl" is a game which plays on the ludic elements of live stage performance and a carefully conceived narrative on the history of vinyl records from 1949 to 2007.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
"postvinyl" is a computer game which can be used in two ways:
1. As a stand alone game the player explores the history of vinyl records by navigating through an audio-visual space filled with records and pop history paraphemalia.
2. As a performance the game is a DJ set-up, which mixes the sounds from the game with the music played by a real DJ. The live music created by the real DJ is accompanied by the real-time sounds of the "half-real" [July, 2005] DJ, i.e. the DJ avatar.
The Unreal conversion uses advanced scripting to create a game where a virtual DJ can play his vinyls in a computer game. The performance shows the game environment as a projection and has the real-life DJs accompany the virtual DJ in real time. The game is a performance tool for a double performance of gamer and DJ.
