In our time, people look at the (Western) world with mistrust and expect little more from the future than perhaps the happiness of Robinson Crusoe, an island all to themselves and far away from everything. To resist the attack of the great machines made by and of men, to survive the consequences of collective madness, these are the highest goals of the intellectuals of the Atlantic region.
Even the dream of the starving, a continent full of T-bone steaks and television quiz shows, is turned into a reality of stomach ulcers and obese degeneration. A moderately cautious attitude seems to be best for people, and dispassion is the least harmful goal.
Can we, it is asked, hope for anything more than that humanity does not blow up its planet, that political institutions maintain a calm order among foolish or sinful people - perhaps with a little improvement here and there? that there is a tacit truce between ideals and reality, individuals and collectives?
