"My Dear Child" - In Memory of the Children of Wiesengrund 1941-1945, Berlin, Eichborndamm 238, 2023 (Cut-out)

WIESENGRUND
A series of paintings by Heike RUSCHMEYER
Death, violence, abuse, destruction, crime, decay, oblivion. Heike Ruschmeyer paints what humanity inflicts upon itself. Every killing has a social context, especially in the case of children who became victims of euthanasia at the "Wiesengrund Municipal Psychiatric Clinic for Children and Adolescents."
Under the cover name "Children´s Ward" of the psychiatric clinic, 66 girls and 109 boys were housed in this building from 1942 to 1945 as so-called "Reich Committee children." They did not receive help, but instead became a merciless field of experimentation. Of the 175 children, 81 died a painful death.
The artist does not exploit the private tragedy, she offers a social diagnosis - it is a social climate report. Poverty and idleness breed despair, and despair breeds violence. And it is only death that reveals this violence: it condenses in the dead, the corpse makes structural violence visible, tangible - incomprehensible. »My painting is political action, not illustration.«
