MAG3
A Sad Dragon Dreams of Southern Seas [Installation]

Erich NOVOSZEL
The material is Chinese paper, originally stuck with wallpaper paste on a wooden wall and stippled in ultramarine pigment. After the presentation (in 2018) it was peeled away like a paper skin. Furthermore a CARDBOARD SUITCASE, the "little Burgenland suitcase", which I used from 1985 to 1987 and which contains historical photos of my parents, a Japanese weavers shuttle, my pocket knife, photos of my hand and some lemons. Lemons dried on strings, photos of my laced-up hands and fresh limes are suspended on the outside.
This "little suitcase" documents how much I am inevitably connected to the history of this small world in Southern Burgenland as an artist and a human being.
Photos of my laced-up hands are a metaphorical reference to the extremely violent history of the people in this area in the 20th century. The multi-ethnical structure of the local society was severely damaged during and after the Nationalist Socialist takeover of the Burgenland, marked by unprecedented aggression of the population towards Jewish and Roma fellow citizens as well as political opponents and the extremely rapid expulsion and later murder of many people from these groups.
