The Robber, Father's Pipe and My Perfect World (Installation)
WALTRAUD PALME

The materials for my work are finds. They are cardboard figures, originally intended for lessons in primary schools in the 1950s (in Austria). They show what children were supposed to know about the world, thus representing a sort of small encyclopaedia for the little people of that time.

Finds with a history have always fascinated me, especially when they reach far beyond their aesthetic appearance. With their "particles of meaning" they seem to me like narrators of the conditions of a past civilisation.

Somehow rigid, Biedermeier-style, well-behaved and emotionless - with only the robber and the protagonists of fairy tales half-heartedly trying to express threat - they are a collection of the lost time. In their naivety, they seem to possess the firm will to express decency and integrity.

My final work destroys the designated order. The robber is standing in front of the dancing girl that is balancing on a table; the mother is floating past the wolf offering it a plate with hey and the furniture has also got a new function. Everything appears as if someone who does not know our civilisation has been fiddling with the figures in some parts.

Among the finds, other objects have been sneaked in which subvert the idyll. Those are things and figures which contribute to shaping our world today and which push their way into the children's room, into the games of our children.
